Casting a rubber "flap" |
| Hi folks, This is all brand new to me, so please bear with me. I've been reading the FAQ's and Forums and my eyes are starting to glaze over. :) I'm restoring an old car and at least one of the rubber pieces, in this case a 'flap' that helps seal a drain in the firewall, is no longer available. Well...I thought maybe I could cast my own? The flap is only about 3"x4", so not very large. It is presently made of black rubber which is over 30 years old, so it is in pretty poor shape, however I may be able to get my hands on a good condition one just to make a mold. Do you make a kit that I can use to pour something to replace this rubber piece? Obviously it doesn't have to be made specifically from rubber, anything flexible and 'rubber-like' would do - but it should be black. I can post a picture of it on my website if it would help.
Thanks! Jim |

| Yes, I would recommend the High Strength 2 silicone mold making rubber for making the mold of the good one you can get your hands on and then I'd recommend pouring the reproduction of it out of Flex 80 with a little black dye in it.
This would allow you to make a mold of the "good one" and reproduce a new flexible one in black. To figure out how much material (high strength 2 and flex 80), click on the Calculating Volume link in the tool bar and put in the basic dimensions of the piece and how big you think your mold box will be and it will calculate how much material you will need.
Post the pic on your site and let us know where it is at. Pics will help us assist you more.
