Never Waste a Drop of Resin Again! How to Measure Your Silicone Molds
We've all been there – staring down at a big batch of mixed resin with no idea what to do with the excess as it starts to cure. It's stressful, wasteful, and frankly, it costs money! This quick and easy tip will help you measure your silicone molds for the perfect amount of resin every time.
How to Measure Resin for Your Silicone Molds
🍚 The "Craft Rice" Trick
What you'll need:
✅ Your chosen silicone mold
✅ Uncooked rice (this becomes your "Craft Rice")
✅ A baggie for storing your Craft Rice
✅ Measuring cup
🪄 Instructions:
- Fill 'er up! Carefully fill your chosen mold with uncooked rice.
- Measure it out. Pour the rice from the mold into your measuring cup. This is the exact volume of resin your mold needs!
- Recycle that rice. Pour the rice back into the baggie to reuse for future measuring sessions.
- Mix with confidence. Now you know the precise amount of resin to mix – waste not, want not!
🤷 Why This Works
Think of rice grains as tiny measuring tools. They fill all the nooks and crannies within the mold, providing a very close representation of the volume your resin will need.
💡Bonus Tips
Bonus Tip: If you work with the same molds often, write the volume you need directly on the mold with a permanent marker for easy reference!
Bonus Tip 2: Why rice over water?
If you're in a hurry, rice is the way to go! Water can be used to measure a mold's volume, but you'd need to dry the mold thoroughly afterward. Rice eliminates the drying step and the risk of leaving behind bits of lint or paper towel that could get caught in your resin project. It gets you very close to the required amount, typically within a 2-3% margin.
